New Feature: Daily Devotional from Jim Gentil

June 8

It is only when we realize that life is taking us nowhere that it begins to have meaning. – P.D. Ouspensky

The man whispered, “God, speak to me,” and a meadowlark sang.

But, the man did not hear.

So the man yelled, “God, speak to me!!”

And the thunder rolled across the sky.

But, the man did not listen.

The man looked around and said, “God, let me see you!!!”

And a star shone brightly.

But the man did not see.

And, the man shouted, “God, show me a miracle!!!!”

And, a life was born.

But, the man did not notice.

So, the man cried out in despair, “Touch me God, and let me know you are here!!!”

Whereupon, God reached down and touched the man.

But, the man brushed the butterfly away and walked on.

I found this to be a great reminder that God is always around us in the little and simple things that we take for granted . . .

Even in our electronic age . . .

So I would like to add one more . . .

The man cried, “God, I need your help!!!!”

And an e-mail – Positive Spiritual Living – arrived reaching out with good news and encouragement.

But, the man deleted it and continued crying .

Learning to hear God’s Whispers

Individuals need an extended time reflecting on a devotional reading, meditating on a selected passage and being alone with God.

People plant themselves in different parts of our house, walk the neighborhood, or sit on a pew in the local church.

The objective of this time is to be quiet and free of distraction, to enter into the story of His word and learn to hear from God.

We feel that if there is just one thing we can do to help growing emerging leaders, it would be to grow together in learning how to hear God’s voice.

Meditating on the story of Elijah in the cave on Mt. Horeb and standing on the mountain, Elijah encountered God.

But God was not found in the powerful great wind that passed by . . .

Nor was He found in the earthquake that followed . . .

And He was not in the fire.

Next came a sheer silence and Elijah encountered God.

Elijah heard God’s still small voice . . .God’s whispers.

Whispering magnifies the picture of intimacy in drawing close to one another.

When God whispers, we need to be quiet if we want to hear.

When God whispers, we need to draw close.

If our lives are too noisy or if we are too busy, we may miss hearing His voice.

Elijah felt completely wiped out – all alone – and fearful after his encounter with the priests of Baal and pursuit by Jezebel.

In this place up on the mountain, Elijah heard and felt God’s voice of love and care.

God reveals to Elijah His plans and the next step for Elijah.

How much we need to hear God’s voice of love and care, how much we need to hear God’s plans in the midst of our busy and noisy lives.

When Elijah hears God’s words, he is refreshed and then he obeys.

Learning to really listen to God’s whispers means learning to follow and obey His commands.

Henri Nouwen . . .

“Jesus’ life was a life of obedience.

He was always listening to the Father; always attentive to his voice; always alert for his directions.

Jesus was “all ear”.

That is true of prayer – being all ear for God.

The core of all prayer is indeed listening . . . obediently standing in the presence of God.”

Lord, help us be “all ear” for you.

Teach us to listen and to obediently stand in your presence.

-Debbie Law Schwartz

May God bless and protect you so that you may bless those around us!!

Have A Beautiful Day!

May God Richly Bless You now and forever more.

Not what we have, but what we enjoy,

constitutes our abundance.

– John Petit-Senn

What’s at the Heart”

“Behold, Thou desirest truth in the inward parts: and in the hidden part Thou shalt make me to know wisdom.” Psalm 51:6

Have you ever gone to a sawmill and watched them process timber? They take a big log out of the woods that may have bumps and knots on it, and they lay it on a cradle, running it through a saw, cutting off one side. Then they bring it back, turn it, and run it through again to cut off another side. When they’re finished, if you stand and look down it, it’s perfectly straight. But if you look at the end of it, the heart is still crooked. That’s the way it is with some individuals who are outwardly living the Christian life. But Jeremiah 17:9 warns the heart is deceitful above all things and desperately wicked. We need regeneration. We must be born again.

Read Psalm 19:14—
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.”

Pray it from your heart—that today you would desire with everything within you to be pure in thought, word, and deed.
